BIM vs. drawings

Building Information Modelling, or Building Information Model efficiently describes the process of designing, building and operating a building collaboratively using one system of computer models rather than separate sets of drawings. You can experience the relevant building data rather than interpret it from drawings as lines, numbers and symbols. Different disciplines of the construction industry use different systems to create (author) models but you can combine them all in dfferent systems, such as Tekla BIMsight, using open BIM. How much does BIM save?

The graph shows the benefits of collaborative BIM versus using 2D or lonely BIM.

As you can see, there is a dramatic business improvement moving from 2D projects to collaborative BIM.

The mechanical contractor J. C. Cannistraro, LLC analyzed cost data from 408 projects projects performed over 6 years. Their total value was $558,858,574. The percentage of change orders in relation to all costs drops significantly when BIM use increases.

In BIM collaboration, we utilized the models in weekly all-discipline coordination meetings. With all of the discipline models loaded into Tekla BIMsight, we were able to see conflicts and possible design changes.
