Cadds Group and Tekla BIMsight – real-time, efficient collaboration between offices and disciplines
Tekla BIMsight gathers construction documentation in one place
Cadds Group, a multidiscipline drafting service and design consultancy company from Australia utilizes Tekla BIMsight extensively. Their Tekla BIMsight projects contain logged communication, PDFs, project plans, technical queries and all project information in one place that is easily accessed by all project stakeholders. This allows for transparent project progression and eliminates the fractured nature that is typical of traditional construction projects. At the end of each project they have a complete, interactive model that tells a story and is added to organizational process assets so improvements can be continually incorporated into future projects.
Tekla BIMsight as a BIM collaboration tool
On a typical project Cadds Group operates over 3 design centres. "We have numerous remote design groups on-site where the majority of projects are initiated through client liaison and site survey," explains Luke Scanlan, Project Development Manager, Cadds Engineering. Cadds Group's Perth HQ is where the majority of engineering design, project management and design takes place, while the Manila design centre produces the bulk of the models and drawings.
“Regardless of distance all Cadds Group offices can work on the same project at the same time removing downtime and reducing the instances of miscommunication and human error,” Scanlan says.
With multiple design offices focusing on separate areas of the project, it is essential that all offices can collaborate on a project and run through their respective tasks, while maintaining a real time intelligent model that contains information that is required by each project party.
“We run through a workflow that gives us a huge amount of control over our quality assurance systems and mitigates the risk and impact to the project should an error be found,” Luke Scanlan comments.
Cadds Group uses the functionality between Tekla BIMsight and internal data systems to create a model that is a central project focal point, which is automatically updated and synced throughout the duration of the project.
Tekla BIMsight is also the primary form of communication between Cadds Group and the client,
collaboration on issues or deliverables are conducted with the full working model in view by all parties.
Utilizing technology such as Smartboards or tablet devices, the model can be interacted with anywhere by anyone bridging all of the traditional hurdles faced on virtual design and construction projects.
“The most useful function I find in Tekla BIMsight is the ability to keep discussions and instructions off individual’s emails and bring them into a transparent forum that can be followed and tracked by all project teams. When it comes to project tracking, all parties are constantly aware of progress because the model is evolving in line with a set project structure,” Scanlan reviews.
Other Trimble Buildings offering accelerating Cadds Group business
Cadds Group don't settle only on BIM while developing their business; expanding the use of building INFORMATION is an essential part of their workflow. Trimble Buildings group - which Tekla is a part of - is a forerunner developing effective tools to enable real design, build, operate lifecycle for the AEC industry. Cadds Group is a great forerunner in the industry to see the value in DBO lifecycle and taking these tools into the action. Cadds Group utilizes in-house surveyors to increase the accuracy of information coming and going to the site:
“We have purchased a Trimble 3D scanner and are developing the use and procedure behind this equipment,” Scanlan comments. "We are using the scan data in our design work, but we hope to increase the functionality between the scan data and the Tekla construction model."
Why Cadds Group chose BIM for collaboration?
Economic changes are causing the construction industry to review the way we collaborate over a project. Traditionally the construction process has been fractured with individual stakeholders focusing on their own tasks and duties without taking into account the overall workflow and goals of the project.
In the past individual users have protected developments, rather than collaborating with the entire project team and other disciplines. This can have a detrimental effect on the project along with the profitability and efficiency overall. Having an open and shared medium which encourages collaboration and teamwork will benefit all involved in the industry and keep us efficient, productive and competitive.
"Tools such as Tekla BIMsight are generating an environment which encourages communication and the growth of a global community containing like-minded companies that are able to produce deliverables of a higher quality at a cost effective price for our clients. Further to that the range and application of the deliverables we can produce is increasing the more we understand the needs of others involved in our projects," Scanlan summarizes.
"The success of one company in our industry is success for us all."
