Haahtela using SMART Board

Managing huge loads of information becomes useful when you’re able to share the knowledge to the right people, says the Finnish construction management company Haahtela, managing a complex project in Helsinki.

Haahtela manages a complex project by sharing

The Finnish construction management company Haahtela-rakennuttaminen Oy orders the construction of buildings for its customers. Haahtela has used Tekla BIMsight in its particularly challenging project for visualizing complex structures and collaboration between all project members.

The Finnish bank OP-Pohjola is renovating a whole block in Helsinki and Haahtela is managing the project. The engineer responsible for scheduling and building information modeling, Jouni Ojala, says the architecture of the steel frame is extreme. “Something like this has been done in Norway, but basically this project is untypical in an European scale,” Ojala explains.

Understanding the building

The main benefit of Tekla BIMsight in this project was understanding the building better. "The geometry of the building is so challenging that even most experienced foremen said that it is virtually impossible to realize the structures looking at 2D drawings – looking at the model makes sense instantly,” states Ojala.

The models also assure that in meetings and group sessions, everyone is talking about the same thing. “Using 2D-drawings, everyone thinks they are talking about the same issue. Every now and then few people actually are,” Ojala tells.

 “Share information and collaborate”

Haahtela and other companies involved in the project use a project bank to store all models. Everyone can download the model from the bank. Inside the site office they use Tekla BIMsight's Project sharing features to share notes and model updates automatically. Outside communication is handled with BCF notes which are shared vie email. They communicate issues to designers and completion dates from the site, for example.

Haahtela found the Project sharing the most useful functionality in Tekla BIMsight for this project. Now they had divided all the IFC models into different project management folders containing for example only electrical or architectural models, so people could download only the part of the large project they were interested in. In the future Haahtela would like for the users to be able to select which models to download from the Tekla BIMsight package.

Changing the way of working

In the future Haahtela sees that Tekla BIMsight plays a big role in information sharing and collaborative work.  Sharing is also the message the company wants to share with the rest of the BIM world: Managing huge loads of information becomes useful when you’re able to share the knowledge to the right people. If efficiently and in an understandable way – even better.

They will also use SMART Boards more extensively. “It has been proven that it will change the way we work. To the better direction, that is,” Ojala jokes.

Using 2D-drawings, everyone thinks they are talking about the same issue. Every now and then few people actually are.
